Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
