Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
