England along with Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
