Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
